First Days Book Campaign to support World Book Day

Gifting of Book Packs

Because we believe that all children should experience the joy of reading.

Marcus Rashford, when launching The Marcus Rashford Book Club last year shared an unbelievable statistic that over 380,000 children living in the UK have never owned a book.

World Book Day’s mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Why is this important? Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income (Source: OECD)

While First Days includes books with every referral, we want to do more.  We believe the need is greater than ever this year with many children having reduced access to books as a result of school and library closures.

What is in the First Days Book Pack?

We are offering children across the country the gift of 3-4 books (in brand new or excellent pre-loved condition) to help celebrate this World Book Day on 4th March 2021.

How can I help?

You can support this campaign by gifting a book pack to a child.  If you would prefer to purchase books to support this campaign then please visit our Amazon wish list.  We would also gratefully receive any new books that your family have really enjoyed that are not on this list. All books can be shipped directly to First Days Children's Charity, Unit 9, The Business Centre, Molly Millars Lane, Wokingham, RG41 2QZ.

Who is eligible to receive a First Days Book Pack?

Referrals can be made by professionals working with children. We will be creating book packs for 3 to 11 year olds (Pre-School and Primary School age), however if there are children of other ages in a family who would enjoy receiving a gift of some books then we will do our very best to send them a book pack too.

World Book Day will also distribute over 15m £1 World Book Day book tokens, you can find out more here.

We will deliver all packs directly to families with the help of our fabulous volunteers and we will send any further afield by post.

How do I make a referrals?

We have had a phenomenal response to this campaign, thank you so much for all of your referrals. The deadline for making referrals has now passed.
