Referrals Guidelines

Please read our Referrals Guidelines below. This will enable us to help you as quickly and efficiently as we can.

  • Please consider if the family have room for the items you have requested, the capability to put up cot beds, have you measured the doorways for a safety gate, are nappy & clothing sizes correct/provided etc.

  • We appreciate family circumstances can change please let us know if your referral /items are no longer needed and we can re-allocate to another family.

  • Using the tick boxes of items for your referral please be careful to select the items necessary for the family right now. Please avoid asking for several months of clothing.

  • Are the items you are asking for something we provide and are listed on our referral form  (ie no white goods, furniture storage etc.)

  • Please arrange a prompt collection of your referral. Referrals will be kept for a maximum of 2 weeks before it will be reallocated/put back into stock, to help with space and resources.

  • Is your transport big enough for the items you have requested (ie multiple items or larger like cot bed etc)

  • Are you able to collect for a colleagues to save them a trip over and to help us clear our referrals collection area quicker? If a colleague is collecting on your behalf for the above reasons just drop us a line and we'll add it to your notes.

Notes for Slough Pop Up’s

  • Add our visit days in your diary as we are unable to leave items behind or deliver to a different location with the time we have available on these days, and time spent taking it all back and room in the van could be spent processing more referrals.

Referral Policy

This policy outlines the referral criteria and procedure for Families to receive help from First Days.

  • We accept referrals from professionals on behalf of families

  • If family would like to self refer they will need to get a professional to endorse their referral.

  • Professional refers to, but is not limited to: GP's, Health Visitors, Teachers, Social Workers, Housing Officers, Health Visitors and Childcare Workers and other such professionals who work with families.

  • Professionals must use their judgement to determine the level of need; in exceptional circumstances, if someone is available, First Days will send a volunteer to assess the need of the family.

Referral Procedure

If you would like to refer a family to First Days then you need to fill out the referral form on the website, or email us

Upon receiving a referral we will assess the application and review the stock we have on offer at the time. We will be in touch as soon as possible to let the referrer know what we can offer to help the family and then we will arrange delivery of goods. We prefer for the items to be collected by the referrer and not the family directly. However, in exceptional circumstances we can arrange delivery directly.

As the items we have in stock change all the time we cannot guarantee that we will have what the family needs. In this case we will add the family to a waiting list and inform the referrer when an item becomes available.

All families who receive goods from us will do so in good faith that we have assessed the items to be of good quality and safe.

In general we endeavour to fulfil all referrals within 14 days, often this can be quicker though. If the referral urgent or an emergency we will do our best to fulfil the request as quickly as possible.
